Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the questions most frequently asked of Ken over the past 20 years....

1. Do I have an early or a late model ATOMIC-4?

This answer needs its own page... click here for a detailed explanation of the difference. If you're still confused after consulting the document, call or email Ken.

2. Why is my engine shutting down?

Great question! There's a wonderful video on the Moyer Marine website that walks you through a diagnostic to determine why your engine is shutting down. Click here to go to the video. You can also order the Unexpected Shutdown List from their website here. If you need more help, call or email Ken.

3. I have water in my oil, do I need to replace my head gaskets?

In most cases, no. Water in the oil can come from several sources, including over cranking the engine in an attempt to start it, a poorly designed or constructed exhaust system, or, rarely, a crack in the block head or manifold. Head gaskets are rarely the cause of water in the oil. Please  call or email Ken to help you diagnose the source of the water in your oil.

4. What is fresh water cooling? Do I need it?

The ATOMIC-4 was created with a raw water cooling system. In most cases, raw water contains minerals, sediment, bacterial slime, or salt, any or all of which can cause blockages within the engine. Installing a fresh water cooling system eliminates the challenges inherent with raw water cooling, and can increase the health and longevity of your engine.

To purchase a fresh water cooling kit from Moyer Marine, go here. For instructions on how to install a Moyer Marine fresh water cooling system, watch this video.

If you're still confused, call or email Ken.

5. Do I really need a thermostat?

The short answer is yes, and here's why. As your engine starts to heat, the thermostat repositions, eventually completely extending itself to discharge the water directly through the exhaust system, allowing for maximum cooling. Although not originally found on Early model engines, Moyer Marine now manufactures a thermostat specifically suited to your ATOMIC-4.

6. How do I winterize my engine?

There's an excellent step by step explanation in the Moyer Marine Universal ATOMIC-4 Service and Overhaul Manual. It's in Chapter 9, section 3. You can buy one here. And please, don't even call me if you don't have a manual! It's the best that's ever been written for the ATOMIC-4.

7. How often do I need to change my impeller/spark plugs/oil?

We recommend changing the impeller every 2-3 seasons, along with performing a pressure and acid wash of the block, head and manifold per the instructions in the Cooling System chapter of the Moyer Marine manual. See the answer to question 7 to order the manual. For more information, call or email Ken.
